New Manchester United signing Memphis Depay has claimed that fans should not be comparing him with former great Cristiano Ronaldo, as it puts unwanted pressure on him.
Depay has moved to United in a £ 25 million deal from PSV Eindhoven. He has been one of the most wanted players in Europe after a stellar season with the Dutch club. Even though it has been extremely easy to score goals in the Dutch league, but the talent within the 21-year-old has been apparent for everyone to see. Depay has cost United around a similar sort of money – if adjusted for inflation – that Ronaldo did while he moved to Old Trafford in 2003.
Ronaldo went on to become one of the world’s best players and he has since moved to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of £ 80 million. United reckon that they have a bargain on their hands if Depay turns out good. However, the 21-year-old has straightaway rejected comparisons with Ronaldo. Such comparisons have been the talk of the town since he has signed for the club. Depay is the first exciting winger to arrive at United since Ronaldo in 2003. Dutchman Louis van Gaal is expected to provide him with a comforting first season at Old Trafford.
“I don’t want to compare myself with somebody like that. That is the best player in the world. I don’t want to talk too much. I want to show it on the pitch. I am still young, [I have not been] in the game for many years in the game, I [only] played two seasons for PSV. I want to let my feet speak.”I have been working with the trainer also in the World Cup. You see what he expects. Before I play on the left wing, I think I am a winger. But where he puts me is on the bus,” said Depay.
