RONALDO EQUALS GOALSCORING RECORD

Portuguese national team skipper Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled the record for the most goals scored in men’s international football after he found the back of the net twice in the 2-2 draw between his team and France in a Group F clash at the Euro 2020 tournament.

Ronaldo came into the game with 107 goals on the international scene after a return of three goals in the first two games at Euro 2020. He scored two goals in the 3-0 thumping of Hungary in the first game of the tournament for European champions Portugal. The Portuguese team scored all the three goals in the final six minutes of the match with the Hungarians. Cristiano Ronaldo added a brace to the opening goal from left-back Raphael Guerreiro.

In their second game in Group F, Portugal were beaten 4-2 by immediate past world champions Germany despite taking the lead through skipper Ronaldo thereby taking him to within two goals of Iranian football legend Ali Daei who scored 109 goals for his country before he retired.

In what was the repeat of the final of the last Euro tournament in France five years ago, Portugal and France played out a four-goal thriller with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema getting two goals each. Portugal silenced the French fans when the two countries met in the final courtesy the 1-0 win over France at the end of extra time. Former Swansea City striker Eder came off the bench to deliver the knockout blow for France in extra time.France could notavenge the defeat to Portugal as they had to settle for a draw in their latest meeting in the European Championship.

The two goals from Ronaldo against France took him to 109 goals and level with Daei. His brace ensured that Portugal will face Belgium in the round of 16. Cristiano Ronaldo can break the record of Iranian legend Daei if he scores against the Red Devils.
